Summary from Publisher’s Website: Pacey and Slasher the Unicorn are back! And THIS time it’s personal in this laugh-out-loud graphic novel series with ATTITUDE. Perfect for fans of Phoebe and Her Unicorn, the Bad Guys, and anyone who loves (or hates!) unicorns!

The last time Pacey Packer was in Rundalyn, the world of unicorns, she sliced the horn off of Arkane, the Evil Apha Unicorn, and took away his power. KI-AHHHH! TAKE THAT, BAD GUYS! Now the unicorns and other creatures under Arkane’s rule call her . . . THE HORN SLAYER!

Pacey may be a LEGEND in the world of unicorns, but she didn’t finish the job. With Slasher’s help, can she use the power of the unicorn horn to rescue the statue kids and escape the fury of the Great (but seriously hornless and now SERIOUSLY mad at her) Arkane?!

Note: This review is done from memory. I originally read this a short bit ago.

Page Pig Thoughts: This was the first book in the series that we read. Pacey is egotistical and Slasher is grumpy, but they still make relatable heroes all the same. The grumpy unicorn concept is rather amusing, but reading the first book might have improved my comprehension of all of the action. I liked that teamwork was needed to save the day, no one person was able to do everything on their own. The idea of the severed unicorn horn having corrupting magic was also intriguing, I am curious where that one goes.

Overall, this was a pretty good read, although the kidnapping unicorns and mysterious dark creatures from the deep may be a little scary for younger or sensitive readers. The publisher’s website description says that this book is perfect for fans of Phoebe and her Unicorn. I happen to be a  fan of Phoebe and her Unicorn, however, past the sarcasm, I don’t necessarily see the parallel to these books, nor do I enjoy Pacey nearly as much as Phoebe.

Page Pup reread these several times, I guess because they are graphic novels, not really sure. Something was appealing though.

Family Unit:

  • Pacey is the older sister of Mina. They live with their mother and father.
  • Slasher the unicorn is the younger brother of Arkane, the evil unicorn king, and Lark the lost unicorn. Isolina was their mother.
  • Zella is Loomi’s aunt. They are mogs.

Conflict/Social Issues:

  1. Unicorns put tracking ankle cuffs on mogs to keep them as slaves.
  2. Arkane’s horn corrupts whomever is holding it, so no one can keep it very long.
  3. Arkane would like to turn Slasher into a cyslug, so not much brotherly love left there.

Positive Items:

  1. Plans are thought about and created before any rescue plan actions are put into play.
  2. Teamwork is what saves the day, not just Pacey acting on her own ideas.
  3. Pacey learns that being a great leader is more than just acting on impulse. Being a great leader requires skills, like self control.
  4. Slasher finds a way to like himself as he is in plushie form.

Items of Interest:

  1. Pacey chases the dog that she is dogsitting across a rainbow bridge back into Rundalyn. Mina chases Pacey.
  2. Slasher’s friend, Carlos, had come back to the human world and takes plushie Slasher back across the rainbow bridge.
  3. Pacey is now revered as the Horn Slayer because she cut off Arkane’s magical horn.
  4. Arkane, the high unicorn, had been luring children to his castle and turning them into statues. Pacey had been trying to find a way to save the statue children. Carlos and the mogs were also trying to save the statue children.
  5. Carlos discovers that Arkane’s horn tempts and corrupts. When he was holding it, he didn’t want to let go. Now he no longer holds it.
  6. Slasher decides that he no longer wants to be a unicorn because of who he was, so he decides to stay a plushie.
  7. Carlos feels responsible for children being turned into statues. Carlos was the one that gave the gift of a unicorn statue to Arkane that made him angry and started turning children into statues.
  8. Pacey is corrupted by Arkane’s horn and won’t let go of it to keep the statue children rescue plan going.
  9. The statue children are turned back into regular children.
  10. Zella the mog is an amazing warrior. She rescues Pacey, Mina, Slasher, and the statue children from the castle. Carlos was trapped in rubble.
  11. The statue children’s tears water the pods that create the rainbow bridges back to their homes.
  12. Arkane kidnaps Carlos. Pacey and Slasher create a plan to exchange a fake unicorn horn for Carlos. Arkane gets upset when he sees the fake horn. A huge tentacle from the Dark Caverns bursts through the ground and grabs Arkane’s actual horn.
  13. The statue children were freed, so Carlos goes home. Pacey was initially disappointed because she thought Carlos would continue to help her, but realizes that Carlos going home is the right thing for him.
  14. Pacey admires Zella’s skills.
  15. Pacey and Mina go home because Zella will keep things under control while the search for Arkane’s horn is going on.
  16. Pacey starts preparing for her return to Rundalyn when she gets home.
