Summary from Book: Life in Breakfast Town is pretty uneventful for Peggy Pancake. That is, until the Bacon Bullies pull of a prank that accidentally gives her superhero abilities!

Note: This review is done from memory. I originally read this awhile ago.

Page Pig Thoughts: Quirky breakfast food puns made this a book that I really wanted to enjoy, however it fell a bit flat. I never really got into the story and the witty puns were not enough to really entertain me.

Page Pup started reading this one, but never finished. Which means that does not make for a high rating. When asked, Page Pup gives this one the same rating.

This is likely just an adult perspective versus a kid perspective item, but I was intrigued that the drawing for Dr. Breakfast Sandwich has a “BS” on the back of his cape. The majority of kids may not think much of that, but it is weird to look at a graphic novel for kids and see BS in the illustrations many times over.

While this one was not exciting for us, other readers may be in love with the puns and superhero action.

Family Unit: Peggy lives at home with her mother, father, and brother, Patrick

Conflict/Social Issues:

  1. Peggy’s parents would like her to be more like her brother. They also want her to finally make the scheduled and rescheduled family picture time. Peggy feels like she messes everything up at home.
  2. The Bacon Bullies intimidate others in the hallways.

Positive Items:

  1. Luc is an ever supportive and encouraging friend.
  2. Peggy uses her superpowers for good. She defends Luc and rescues Professor Egg.

Items of Interest:

  1. Peggy’s parents “aren’t comparing her to her brother,” they are just “encouraging her to follow his example.” Patrick seems to do everything right, including making it to the bus stop on time, but Peggy struggles through things at home.
  2. When Peggy gets superhero powers, she wants to show her family. When she tries to show them, nothing super happens. She was just tired, but her family thought she was just making everything up.
  3. The Bacon Bullies secretly snag a liquid from the visiting career day scientist’s bag, then secretly dump it into Peggy’s lunch. Peggy doesn’t know why she doesn’t feel well, and doesn’t really understand why she can suddenly fly.
  4. Peggy’s sidekick friend, Luc Croissant, is exuberant and always encouraging/helping Peggy.
  5. The Evil Breakfast Sandwich wants to learn how to fly, so he pesters Peggy.
  6. Peggy does take a stand against the Bacon Bullies. She didn’t like them picking on the new kid, Luc. Peggy winds up beating up the Bacon Bullies using her newfound superhero abilities that she is unaware that she has. Luc becomes her friend after this.
